A Journey of Dignity:

How Health Touch Foundation and Sunworld Safaris are Transforming disability to possibility in Maasai Communities

The Why: Isolation, Vulnerability, and Unmet Needs

In the vast, rugged, and often unforgiving South Rift Valley region of Kenya, specifically in Magadi, Kajiado West sub-county, reside remote Maasai communities. This expansive and isolated area, home to approximately 42,000 people, is characterized by its arid terrain, scarce water points, and households scattered across immense distances, often more than 20 kilometers apart. Navigation without local guidance is nearly impossible, a testament to the region’s challenging landscape.

Beyond the geographical hurdles, these communities face profound health and socio-economic and challenges. Traditional practices, such as FGM, child marriage and hence early pregnancies are widespread, leading to high child mortality rates, sometimes maternal deaths and a significant incidence of children born with disabilities, particularly cerebral palsy. Tragically, disability is often viewed as a curse, leading to the neglect, lack of diagnosis, and insufficient support for these vulnerable children and their families. Limited infrastructure, lack of access to specialized healthcare, and deep-rooted socio-cultural barriers disproportionately affect children, with disabilities, mothers, and women creating a cycle of marginalization and suffering.

The Collaboration: A Shared Vision for Dignity

It was this urgent need for change that brought together Gabrielle Nowak and Liz, igniting the partnership between Sunworld Safaris and Health Touch Foundation (HTF). Restoring Dignity, One Child at a Time started in 2017, Health Touch Foundation adopted a human-centered and holistic approach to address the complex needs of children with disabilities, their mothers/caregivers, and the wider community through community-based outreach support.

Sunworld Safaris became an indispensable partner in this mission, ensuring that no child is left behind. Their critical contribution lies in the provision of robust vehicles, specially built to withstand the challenging terrain like Magadi. Driven by compassionate guides who seamlessly integrate into the HTF team, these vehicles enable HTF to reach every child and family, delivering much-needed services in comfort and safety. This collaboration is a testament to the power of shared vision and complementary strengths, with HTF providing the specialized care and Sunworld Safaris bridging the logistical gaps in a truly empathetic manner.

Joint Initiatives: Delivering Holistic Mobile Outreach Services

To holistically improve the health and well-being of children with disabilities and special needs, the partnership’s approach focuses on delivering integrated mobile outreach services. These comprehensive services address the interconnected needs of the children and their caregivers through various impactful activities:

  • Regular Integrated Mobile Medical Outreach Camps: Providing essential medical care for both children and their caregivers. We have done at least 42 mobile outreaches together.
  • Nutritional Support: Delivering vital nutritional support for child growth and development.
  • Specialized Therapy and Disability Aids: Offering specialized therapy and providing necessary disability aids for children with special needs.
  • Caregiver Training: Equipping mothers and caregivers with practical skills and ongoing support.
  • Reproductive Health Education: Conducting crucial reproductive health education for women and girls.

The Impacts: A Community Transformed by Compassion

The collaborative efforts of Sunworld Safaris and Health Touch Foundation have yielded profound and visible impacts within the Maasai communities of Magadi:

  • Reduced Stigma: A significant reduction in the stigma associated with disability has been observed. Children are no longer hidden away from the larger community or even family members, a remarkable shift in perception.
  • Increased Community Support: The community now actively acknowledges that “in every child’s journey, the whole community walks alongside.” This is evident in the proactive way the community contacts HTF whenever a Sunworld vehicle is spotted, signaling a new child in need of attention and intervention.
  • Strengthened Local Partnerships: Through enhanced mobility, the partnership has successfully collaborated with and strengthened local working relationships. They work hand-in-hand with local health facilities, schools, churches, and community organizations, creating inclusive spaces where children with disabilities are not just included but celebrated.
  • Life-Saving Transport: In emergency or life-threatening situations, the partnership’s ability to transport children to health facilities for specialized care in comfort and safety has proven invaluable, especially considering the
  • Program Growth: The program has grown from serving a single child to reaching over 150 children across 12 community units. Furthermore, 15 children have been successfully integrated into a special school, a monumental step towards their educational and social inclusion.

Looking Ahead: Towards Sustainable Change and Broader Partnerships

While significant strides have been made, the journey towards creating sustainable change by empowering families, enhancing health outcomes, and building a supportive, inclusive community is far from over. There are still many children within this vast landscape who remain unreached.
To bridge these remaining gaps and expand their impact, the partnership envisions several key
areas for future collaboration and growth:

  • Increased Outreach Frequency: Implementing twice-a-month outreach camp activities would significantly improve follow-up care and enable the enrollment of new cases.
  • Expanding Educational Opportunities: The area currently has only one special needs school. The partnership dreams of establishing a second special unit in another part of Magadi to accommodate more children.
  • Identifying New Partners: Health Touch Foundation is actively seeking new partners who are willing to embrace the “travel with purpose” movement. This includes medical professionals for medical camps, therapists for skills training, general volunteers for data and research, teachers, and students eager to learn about and support the communities. “Compassion in action” remains their mantra.
  • Mentoring the Next Generation: The partnership is keen on mentoring the younger generation and involving local Gen Z in their programs, an initiative that has already garnered significant interest and support. They are actively seeking a partner to support this crucial agenda.
The partnership between Health Touch Foundation and Sunworld Safaris is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when organizations unite with a shared purpose. Their journey in the remote Maasai communities of Magadi is not just about providing services; it’s about restoring dignity, fostering inclusion, and building a brighter future for the most vulnerable children, one compassionate outreach at a time.
