Detailed Itinerary - Save the Elephant

Day 1

Arrival in Nairobi

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta international Airport in Nairobi, you will be met by a Sunworld Safaris representative and after a briefing of your safari, transferred to Tamarind Tree Hotel. Lunch and dinner at your own arrangement. Overnight at Tamarind Tree Hotel (Bed & Breakfast).

Day 2

Nairobi – Visit to Sheldrick Wildlife

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel at 1000HRS and proceed to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for the public hour visit from 1100HRS to 1200HRS. Thereafter, transfer to a local restaurant for lunch. After lunch, visit the Giraffe Centre which is involved in the conservation efforts to save the rare Rothschild Giraffe. Enjoy a unique experience to come into close contact with these beautiful animals and hand feed them. Later, you will be taken to a supermarket for shopping (payable direct). Only selected beverages are included at Ithumba Camp and Umani Springs and you can purchase more if required (payable direct). Thereafter, transfer back to your Hotel. Dinner on your own arrangement. Overnight at Tamarind Tree Hotel (Bed & Breakfast).

Day 3

Nairobi – Tsavo East (Ithumba Camp) 6 hours’ drive

After breakfast, drive to Ithumba Camp to arrive for late lunch. After you have relaxed abit, you can comfortably move into your accommodation and relax from the journey. At 1700HRS, you will visit the release station. This is the first time you come into contact with the emigrating elephants. Maybe your sponsored elephant will be there too. In the evening, the camp’s cook will have prepared a tasty and rejuvenating meal. Dinner and overnight at Ithumba Camp (Full board).

This beautiful luxury camp is built on a hill and incorporates high standards of construction and decor.

Ithumba Hills offers 4 spacious and elegant raised tented bedrooms, sleeping up to 8 guests. The rooms have Lamu-styled doors as well as floor to ceiling mesh, which offer 180 degree views of Ithumba’ s stunning views, have the option of being made into double or twin rooms.

All rooms have their own secluded location on Ithumba Hill, each with an en-suite bathroom area, exposed to the African Sky, as well as generously raised balcony with sun/star lounges and plenty of space to relax and unwind.

Day 4 - 5

Tsavo East (Ithumba Camp)

Two exciting and adventurous days await you. You will visit the release station as often as possible. You will drive to the release station early in the morning at around 5.45 a.m. At this time, it is time to feed the elephants together with your animal keepers. After two intense hours, you go back to camp. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before you go to the mud hole at around 10:30 a.m., where up to 100 young elephants gather. Some keep coming back years after being released into the wild. It is precisely here that you gain unforgettable memories.

Return for lunch around 1:00 PM. The afternoon is available for relaxation. The last visit of the day to the elephants takes place at 5.30 p.m. The elephants are slowly coming back from nature to the gates. At this time the evening rituals follow and you return to the camp for dinner. Overnight at Ithumba Camp. (Full board)

Day 6

Tsavo East - Lumo Conservancy (approx. 4.5 hours drive)

On this day you go to the elephants again. Say goodbye to this special place and proceed to Lions Bluff Lodge in Lumo Conservancy after breakfast. This private sanctuary is home to large herds of wild elephants which are particularly protected here. The sanctuary lies between Tsavo West and Tsavo East and offers elephants a walking corridor between the parks. This protected area has over 4,000 members who all benefit from tourism and therefore have an increased interest in animal welfare. A fine example of a peaceful coexistence between humans and animals. In addition to the elephants, a lot of other animals can also be observed here. Dinner and overnight at Leopards Lair. (Full board).

Cheetah Tented Camp is 48km west of Voi on the Taveta Road within the 48,000 acre Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary.

Day 7

Lumo Conservancy

Spend whole morning in Lumo Wildlife Conservancy with unlimited game drives followed by lunch at the Lodge. In the afternoon drive to Voi stockades in Tsavo East National Park for the 1700HRS visit. Thereafter, drive back to Lumo Wildlife Conservancy to arrive at around 0715HRS. Dinner and overnight at Leopards Lair (Full board).

Day 8

Lumo Conservancy – Kibwezi Forest/ Umani Springs (3 hours’ drive)

Say goodbye to the Lumo Wildlife Conservancy. After breakfast, drive to the Kibwezi Forest. This reserve is an extension of the Chyulu Hills National Park. Umani Springs in the Kibwezi Forest is home to the 3rd release station on your journey. Depending on the time of your arrival, you can still watch the elephants at the mud hole. After lunch you will have the opportunity to relax. The accommodation in Umani Springs also has a swimming pool – a welcome opportunity to cool off, especially on hot days. At 1700HRS, there is a visit to the release gates of the elephants. Dinner and overnight at Umani Springs (Full board).

The camp offers the essence of African comfort whilst actively pursuing environmental stability and wildlife preservation.

Kibwezi Forest / Umani Springs

Visit the gates again early in the morning around 0600HRS, where the elephants are fed.
Explore the area and relax in the lodge. At noon you will visit the elephants again for a mud bath. Visit the elephants again in the late afternoon. Let the evening end comfortably in the wilderness of Africa. Dinner and overnight at Umani Springs (Full board).

Kibwezi Forest – Nairobi (approx. 5 ½ hours’ drive)

Have one last visit to the elephants in the release station in the morning. Enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading back to Nairobi with packed lunch. In the afternoon, proceed for shopping if required payable direct. In the evening, transfer to a local restaurant for dinner payable direct and thereafter, to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward international flight.
